Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Arizona is a direct-access state, which means you do not need a physician's referral to begin physical therapy. You can contact us directly to schedule your evaluation. If your insurance requires a referral for reimbursement, check with your provider before your first visit.

Your initial evaluation is a comprehensive one-on-one session with Dr. Nelson. He will review your health history, discuss your goals, perform a thorough physical examination, and develop a personalized treatment plan. Please arrive 10–15 minutes early if you have not already completed your intake forms. Wear comfortable clothing that allows access to the area being treated.

Initial evaluations typically run 60 minutes. Follow-up sessions are generally 45–60 minutes. The number of sessions needed varies by condition — Dr. Nelson will give you a realistic estimate at your first appointment. Because every session is private and focused, patients at The Body Shop typically achieve outcomes in fewer visits than in a traditional clinic setting.

The Body Shop is a private-pay practice. We do not bill insurance directly; however, we provide detailed superbills you can submit to your insurance carrier for out-of-network reimbursement. Many patients with PPO plans receive partial or full reimbursement. Please check with your insurance provider to confirm your out-of-network physical therapy benefits.

Three things set us apart. First, every session is conducted personally by Dr. Nelson — no aides, no assistants, no sharing the hour with other patients. Second, we invest in equipment (Magnetolith EMTT, radial and focused shockwave) that most clinics simply do not have. Third, Dr. Nelson's background spans elite sports medicine, strength and conditioning, and corrective exercise — giving him a uniquely broad toolkit to address the full continuum from pain to performance.

Most patients tolerate both treatments very well. Shockwave therapy can cause mild to moderate discomfort during the session, particularly over inflamed tissue, but this is brief and stops immediately after treatment. Some post-treatment soreness for 24–48 hours is common. Magnetolith EMTT is generally well-tolerated with minimal or no discomfort. Dr. Nelson will explain what to expect and adjust intensity based on your comfort level.

Yes. Post-surgical rehabilitation is one of our core services. Dr. Nelson works in coordination with your surgeon's protocol while ensuring your recovery is as complete and efficient as possible. Contact us with your surgery details and we will advise on the right time to begin treatment.
